The Apple IIgs (gs standing for graphics & sound) while maintaining backward compatibility with earlier models, supports enhanced graphics and a dedicated sound synthesizer. It was a very modern upgrade for the time, taking many cues from the Macintosh line. The IIgs supported networking via AppleTalk, RGB video, a 3.5� floppy drive, mouse, and even a graphical user interface. The system was still very expandible via IIe style card slots. Accelerator cards were very popular upgrades for the IIgs.
